The Finer Details
As you take in views of the Roman Forum and the ancient city around you, it’s hard not to wonder: What was life like at the height of the Roman Empire, and how did it all begin to change? This Rome history tour follows that question into a lesser-known chapter of Roman civilization: the transformation from imperial capital to medieval city, with San Clemente’s underground levels as one of its most revealing stops. Step below the surface of today’s city with an Expert who helps Rome’s hidden layers make sense.

At San Clemente Basilica, descend into nearly 2,000 years of history without losing the thread. The medieval church sits above an ancient Mithraeum, an underground temple, and Roman-era buildings preserved below. Buried walls, worn steps, and quiet chambers become evidence of how faith, domestic life, and urban change overlapped. Instead of simply seeing ruins, begin reading them as clues to the people who moved through these spaces.

Your archaeologist or historian guide brings a fresh perspective to a chapter many Rome visitors miss. Follow the conversation toward what interests you: imperial decline, early Christian worship, private homes, or the practical choices that shaped a changing city. That flexibility makes the experience rich for history buffs and approachable for newcomers alike.

Depending on your interests and museum availability, the route opens toward either SS Quattro Coronati or the Museo della Forma Urbis. In the fortified church, rare 13th-century frescoes and a serene cloister reveal a quieter medieval Rome. At the museum, fragments of the Forma Urbis Romae, an ancient marble map from the 3rd century, help the vanished city take shape again.

A visit to Case Romane del Celio brings you closer to daily life. Move through intimate rooms where preserved frescoes and mosaics offer glimpses of private spaces during the Empire’s final days. Here, your Expert has the space to connect households, belief, and politics without rushing the moment.

By the end, Rome’s transition from antiquity to the Middle Ages feels less like a clean break and more like a layered conversation. The tour favors quieter sites, a relaxed pace, and thoughtful exchange, so different ages and interests can stay with the story. Leave with specific, surprising details that make Rome easier to explain, and far more interesting to keep discussing.

Our guide, Dony was amazing! His in-depth knowledge kept us learning all through the tour. Highly recommend!

Giulia was fantastic; she provided wonderful insight and information about everything we were seeing. Highly recommend her!

My sister and I today had an absolutely spectacular tour with Federico. I think it is fair to say that we are fairly critical people. I am a former academic; my sister is highly involved with the arts .As an academic, I enjoyed both challenging my students and being challenged myself. And so today in our all too short, three hour tour with Federico we chatted about extraordinarily diverse topics: the agricultural means of production and support of the Nobles in Rome by the people in the countryside, the Jews of Rome in antiquity, the ways in which the monks in the crypt were skeletonized, contemporary and ancient politics etc etc. These topics were by no means what we had anticipated talking about with him!! Of course, as expected, he was lyrical and expert about the history of Rome, and our time with him was all too short. He excelled as an educator, leaving us with a desire to learn far more than we were able to glean from this all too brief experience. We were tremendously impressed that no matter what we asked him, he had something valuable to contribute. Frankly, there are not enough superlatives to offer and we end with this: if you have the opportunity and the privilege to have Federico interpret and show you some of the wonders of this eternal city seize it! Many thanks, Federico. ( pictured is Federico with his iPad which he used to illustrate salient points)
