From neon-lit Shibuya to lantern-glowing Gion, this 10-day journey visits four of Japan’s historic capitals: Nara, Kyoto, Kamakura and Tokyo. On it, you will see how power, faith and aesthetics moved across Japan, and how they still shape the country you encounter today.
Led by Context Experts, you will travel east to west and back again by metro and Shinkansen, weaving together headline sights with quieter backstreets, markets and neighborhood shrines. Structured, story-driven days of guided touring with subject matter experts are balanced with free time to follow your own interests, during which optional experiences are available if you would like to go deeper.
Whether this is your first visit or a long-awaited return, this itinerary is built around a coherent narrative, not a checklist. You will leave with a clear sense of how the Japan of emperors and samurai became the Japan of bullet trains and bright lights. Arrive in Tokyo and settle in at your hotel. This day is free from planned tours to give you space to adjust following travel. However, If you are up for it, consider asking your hotel concierge for recommendations close by, and ease into the city with a short, evening walk to get a feel for Tokyo’s pace, street life, and atmosphere.
Begin in Tokyo’s civic and commercial core to understand how the city works as Japan’s political and economic engine. Continue into design-forward districts to see how post-war planning, contemporary architecture, and everyday aesthetics shape Tokyo’s modern identity.
Spend the day in areas where Tokyo’s older layers remain visible in temple precincts, traditional shopping streets, and long-standing neighborhoods. The focus is on continuity, craft, and local rhythms that still define daily life beneath the modern skyline.

Travel to Kamakura for a focused look at Japan’s first warrior government and the cultural world that grew around it. Visit key temple sites and coastal landmarks while learning about samurai rule, Zen, and how new power structures reshaped Japan.
Check out of your hotel and travel west by Japan’s famous bullet train to Kyoto. This day is intentionally lighter; arrive, check in, and keep the evening open for rest or a relaxed local dinner near your hotel.
Explore Kyoto’s political and cultural landmarks to understand the city’s long life as an imperial center and symbolic heart of Japan. Continue through historic districts where ritual spaces, craftsmanship, and neighborhood traditions abound.
Experience Kyoto’s aesthetic and spiritual essence through gardens and temple spaces that shaped enduring ideas of beauty, restraint, and space. You’ll follow a shrine route into the hills to see how worship, pilgrimage, and landscape interlock in Kyoto’s culture.
Take advantage of a second unstructured day for independent exploration and downtime. You will receive a menu of options such as scenic areas, craft and design stops, additional temple districts, food neighborhoods, and slower-paced routes for rest and reflection.
Travel to Nara to explore Japan’s early capital and the monumental religious architecture that defined it. After the visit, return to Tokyo by Shinkansen for your final night, with time to settle in and prepare for departure.

The tour usually begins in Tokyo and ends in Kyoto. We recommend you book flights using the following airports: Haneda Airport (HND) in Tokyo. Narita (NRT) airport just outside of Tokyo. Kansai International Airport (KIX) in Osaka (near Kyoto). Just let us know what works best for you.

Daily meeting points are confirmed in advance and are typically set at a convenient location near to the tour starting point. If you would like a hotel pick-up or private car services, these can be arranged separately.

Expect a meaningful amount of walking, stairs, and time using public transit. Many days involve several kilometers on foot across mixed terrain and crowded areas. If you have mobility concerns, tell us before booking so we can advise appropriately.

The itinerary runs in all weather. Routes and pacing can be adjusted to keep the day comfortable while preserving the core experience. Plan for comfortable footwear and wet-weather layers.

However, we understand that you may want to make light adjustments to the scheduling and include certain venues, which we are happy to try and accommodate. For heavier customizations or bespoke itineraries, we offer this as an optional extra service and will do our best to design the experience you desire.

Plan for flights, hotels, most meals, and personal expenses. Public transport for guided days and the Shinkansen transfer are included. To ease your travel within Japan, we'll provide you with a subway pass for the trip's adventures; a keepsake for your travels beyond our tour. Optional extra services such as hotel pickups, private car hires, and taxis are available upon request.
