Today Madrid is a graceful and elegant city, celebrated for its tapas, chocolate, and vast art collections, including the masterpieces at the Prado Museum. Clara was a great host. She had prepared by going to Toledo the previous weekend to check the status of the sites with COVID restrictions. She filled the day in an organized manner, building upon the layers of history and personalizing the tour according to our interests. I had a tremendous moment of discovery when she told a story, unaware of the link to a family surname with Sephardic roots. Life-changing.
The tapas tour was a wonderful way to wind up a magical vacation in Madrid. We visited four tabernas and sampled regional foods and drink, including regional vermouth, the surprising new "in" drink. Each visit was carefully curated to feature Spain's favorite foods and wines. Helena was an informed guide, telling us about the background of each delicious food and its cultural significance. The entire experience felt as if I were being guided by a special friend around Madrid. A lot of food and fun!
Our guide Barbara was amazing. She has a PhD in art and led us on a selective and informed tour of the Prado. She not only told us about the paintings, but she was able to place them in Spain's context: what was going on, the political climate, events occurring in the artists' lives, the significance of the art in modern times, etc. The tour flew by. A truly wonderful immersion in the art of the Prado!
